Memory is something I have thought a lot about during my years of traveling. How come I remember some places and events so well that I can just close my eyes and go back in my mind but other memories have slid away? What is it that makes us remember a place?
People often talk about their memory, as it is something they have, like good sight or a bad hip. But the memory doesn’t exist the same way a body part exists. It is a concept that refers to the process of remembering. Everything that stimulates your senses you are more likely to remember and the more senses that are stimulated, the more likely you are to remember. The sight is a sense we depend too much on when we travel. It is the combination of all our senses, seeing, smelling, hearing, feeling and tasting that give the most memorable travel experiences. We take photos of things we think are interesting but often the picture doesn’t capture the moment, it is only a still caption of a very live experience
My travel tip is therefore not to only take photos of places you visit or things you experience, take a diary with you and write about it at the end of each day. Photos cannot capture smell, feeling, taste and sound but with words you can describe everything you sense with your own words that will bring you right back once home. It is also a fact that the more interesting and challenging your activities are, the more likely you are to move them to your long-term memory. So by consciously stimulating your senses when you travel by facing new physical challenges, learning something new and being open for different things, you will hold the memory of your travel much longer.

Music is also a great way to capture a moment and frame it in the memory. Still remember the trip to Spain when my older sister, her girls and me went to visit our youngest sister when I heard any song from the latest Coldplay album.
