It is quite easy to get stuck in a rut and become predictable while travelling. However, when you do stumble upon those less predictable places that you didn’t expect to be so spectacular, it’s like hitting the jackpot! If you happen to be travelling anywhere near the following places, I highly recommend that you swing by.
1. Brindisi, Italy – known as the place where you catch the ferry to Greece, which was exactly what I was doing! I accidentally ended up spending the night there and was pleasantly surprised. After being in the sweltering heat and ridiculous prices in Rome, Brindisi has a cool breeze, authentic italian food without emptying your budget… and all my photos look like I photoshopped myself in a postcard.
2. Penang, Malaysia – a little piece of heaven, known as the Food Paradise! Ignore the nice looking restaurants and go to the dodgy looking street stalls that will have satay chicken or curry soup for a couple of dollars. Not to mention all the sights that are listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
3. Wellington, New Zealand – Downtown Wellington is extremely cozy and quirky, with little boutiques, the bucket fountain, cafés and restaurants from all over the world. Just remember that it can get bit windy… so don’t wear your shortest skirt!
4. Sitges, Spain – A small town with character, only a couple of hours away from Barcelona. Ideal for when you want to get away from the crowds and the noise but still good for enjoying the Catalonian atmosphere and some beach and sun.
5. Tepoztlan, Mexico – it doesn’t matter whether you wanna visit an old temple on the top of a mountain, eat exotically flavoured icecream, buy silver jewellery at bargain prices or wait around for aliens… Tepoztlan has it all!
These kind of places make travelling worth it… next time you go to a predictable place, you should get on a random bus or train, get off in a random place and see if you can find an unexpected gem such as one of these five!
